

It has twice been adapted for the screen, most recently in 1997 by well-known Hong Kong director Yim Ho. Yoshimoto’s first novel, »Kitchen,« was published in 1987 and »Moonlight Shadow« is included in most editions of it. Her dissertation, the novella »Moonlight Shadow« in 1986 garnered the dean’s prize. Her father was Takaaki (also known as Ryūmei) Yoshimoto the poet and influential intellectual of Japan’s »new left.« Banana began writing at the age of five, and went on to study Japanese literature at Nihon university. Banana (born Mahoko) Yoshimoto was born in 1964 in Tokyo. Each day she takes half an hour to write at her computer, and she says, "I tend to feel guilty because I write these stories almost for fun.". She keeps her personal life guarded, and reveals little about her certified Rolfing practitioner, Hiroyoshi Tahata and son (born in 2003). Whenever she appears in public she eschews make-up and dresses simply. During that time, she took the pseudonym "Banana" after her love of banana flowers, a name she recognizes as both "cute" and "purposefully androgynous."ĭespite her success, Yoshimoto remains a down-to-earth and obscure figure.

She graduated from Nihon University's Art College, majoring in Literature.
